Over weight cats are MUCH more prone to life threatening diseases than those cats that are in shape. They can play the risks of heart disease, diabetes and urinary tract problems.

When I was younger our obese cat would pee all over me when I’d be holding him or when he was laying with me on my bed. It was as though he didn’t even know it was happening, and it was devastating to see.

If your cat is obese the first thing you can do for it is to cut its calorie intake by 30% until it gets down to a target, healthy and average weight. You will also want to cut snacks, treats and any house scraps your cat may be getting from the family. It’s important to lower your cat’s weight to get to back to a healthy figure. Your cat may not agree at first since it will be used to pigging out on more food than it actually needs, but it’s important not to cave under the sweet (yet sometimes annoying) pleading meows.

Your goal isn’t to get your fat cat skinny. You just want it at a healthy weight in a healthy way. There is no reason to take all food sources away from your cat and it can actually be worse because that starvation method will trigger other diseases like fatty liver so don’t do it.

Depending on how obese you cat is right now, you may consider switching it over to a low calorie diet as well which will help your cat feel full with eating less.

Also make sure to try to get your obese cat active! Whether it’s letting it outside or finding some toys that encourage it to get up and play!
