My cat, Tommy, got an abscess for the first time ever when I was in 6th grade. I had let him in from outside (he was an outdoor cat) and was petting him while doing the laundry. He laid down on top of the washer as I did my thing and when I pet him in between washes, he almost bit me and cried.
I was shocked and mad at first, but then I realized it wasn’t an angry cry… it almost sounded annoyed or painful. I gently put my hand on him and pushed him over a bit as he was laying. I then saw it and screamed bloody murder to my mother!
His abscess was on his side and I swear to this day it looked like he just got shot in the side of his stomach! It was a circle of red and white… lots of puss, lots of draining… lots of grossing me out once my mom explained what it really was.
I was relieved it wasn’t a gun shot wound, but didn’t know what to think about this part of his body that just burst open from infection either!
She knew just what to do – she used 3% hydrogen peroxide to clean it daily and it eventually went away. It didn’t seem to take long either, for it to heal. I haven’t had a cat have one since but you never know when one will happen when you’ve got an outdoor cat or more than one animal in the house hold.
