Do You Really Understand Your Cat?

Understanding your cat will help you be able to successfully TRAIN your cat to do what you want it to do. The big secret to training your cat to do amazing things is understanding how your cat learns and processes what you teach.

The clicker is your form of communication with your cat, always remember that.

And the idea of training is to make whatever behavior you WANT your cat to do, to make it very rewarding, fun and enjoyable. And if there are things you don’t want your cat to do, then those things can’t ever be rewarding, fun or enjoyable. In fact, they have to be UN-ENJOYABLE.

It’s very easy to accidentally train your cat to do something you don’t want it to.

If you hate listening to your cat cry and meow over and over, yet every time it does it you let it outside or give it food, well then you are actually training your cat that obnoxious meowing = food, outside time (basically, a reward) so you are rewarding that behavior.

So look at your lifestyle with your cat currently and realize what behaviors annoy you that YOU may be rewarding on a daily basis.

Does your cat annoy the heck out of you at night time? Do you get up and take care of its every need so you can go back to sleep? AKA… did you get up and reward the 5am behavior?

It’s important to realize what your issues are NOW so you can address them in your training.

It’s always easier to AVOID bad habits with your cat in the beginning, then to try to reverse bad habits into good ones.
